The Pollock Pines School District is pleased to announce the selection of Kevin Potter as the new Pinewood Elementary School principal, effective July 1, 2016. Mr. Potter is a hardworking, tireless educator and leader who guides his decisions with the question, “Is this good for students?” Superintendent Kevin Monsma stated, "I am confident that Mr. Potter’s leadership, commitment to ensuring that every child is treated as our own, his honesty, expertise and unapologetic desire to seek perfection will continue to help move both Pinewood and our district forward."
Mr. Potter is described by his current colleagues and students who wrote, " I know the school and the students are in good hands because I know every decision he makes has the question, “Is it good for students?” at its core. I challenge you to find a more talented and dedicated educator than Kevin Potter. Kevin’s belief in students and the potential that resides in each and every student is remarkable.”
Mr. Potter currently serves as the Leadership and Activities Director at El Dorado High School. However he has also worked as the freshman Earth science teacher and helped to set in place the Natural Resources program at El Dorado High School. Previous to those assignments he served as the 7/8 grade math, science and physical education teacher at Mountain Creek Middle School and a Firefighter with CalFire.
Please join us in welcoming Mr. Kevin Potter to our Pollock Pines family.
The El Dorado County Office of Education (EDCOE) is pleased to announce the selection of Kevin Monsma as the new Associate Superintendent of Educational Services, effective July 1, 2016. “Mr. Monsma’s record of achievement, instructional expertise, and conviction to serve, will strengthen EDCOE and the county educational community as a whole,” County Superintendent of Schools Ed Manansala, Ed.D. stated, “EDCOE at the core is about excellence and service. Mr. Monsma’s core values and practice are in full alignment, and we anticipate great things to come.”
Kevin Monsma currently serves as the Superintendent of Pollock Pines Elementary School District and the Superintendent/Principal of Silver Fork Elementary School District, and he looks forward to contributing to the community at the county level. Mr. Monsma expressed, “I am honored to receive this position and the opportunity to support our educators, students and families through the wide range of services provided by EDCOE.”
Under Mr. Monsma’s leadership, Pinewood Elementary and Sierra Ridge Middle School were recognized as California Distinguished Schools. Board Member Thomas Griffin described Mr. Monsma in the following manner, “I have been seated on our Pollock Pines’ Governing Board for twenty years and watched our district grow, but never so much as under the leadership of Kevin Monsma. I have witnessed high morale in our district, but never as high as it presently is. Most importantly, I have seen our expansion of learning opportunities for children, but never so extensively as in the past six years under Mr. Monsma’s direction. I do not want our district to lose Mr. Monsma. Looking at the bigger picture, however, I understand how his leadership and oversight can touch a greater number of students.”
Mr. Monsma started his educational career in 1998, and has held many different positions including first grade teacher, adjunct professor, site resource teacher, director of special projects and assistant superintendent. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Northern Arizona University and a Master’s Degree in Education from California State University, Bakersfield. Both degree programs emphasized bilingual and multicultural concepts that serve him well in El Dorado County.

New Immunization Requirements for 2016
Under a new law known as SB 277, beginning January 1, 2016 exemptions based on personal beliefs, including religious beliefs, are no longer an option for the vaccines that are currently required for entry into child care or school in California. Most families will not be affected by the new law because their children have received all required vaccinations. Personal beliefs exemptions on file for a child already attending child care or school will remain valid until the child reaches the next immunization checkpoint at kindergarten (including transitional kindergarten) or 7th grade.
For more information about SB 277, please see the Frequently Asked Questions available at: http://www.shotsforschool.org/laws/sb277faq/.
